The purpose of the PLU entitled UWA's Using Social Media to Improve Communication Efforts - Communicating and Connecting with Social Media is to examine a collection of practices and techniques that will ensure greater communication efforts through the use of social media. Social media holds potential benefits for schools reaching out to our communities, preparing our teachers, and connecting with our kids. In this short, the PLU will examine how enterprising schools are using social media tools to provide customized professional development for teachers. We will explore the marketing and communications value of developing a social-networking presence and examine the kinds of school and district practices necessary for supporting successful school-based social media efforts. Online discussion groups based on the reading will provide the participants with opportunities to share and reflect social media practices. The format of the PLU course is designed so that teachers and leaders across the state will have opportunities to work together in a true professional learning community environment. The study will conclude with the participants creating a toolkit for social media that can be used in his/her district/school. The PLU will be available for three consecutive years. One (1) PLU will be awarded.
