Abstract/Description:
During this professional development session, teachers will actively experience:
•Practical classroom application of the Common Core State Standards
for Mathematics and/or state/local standards
•Learn strategies for developing higher order thinking skills
•Visual thinking
•Teaching for understanding
•Developing number fluency and solving word problems
•Interventions and differentiated instruction
•Planning, assessing and developing powerful, meaningful classroom
routines
•Personal mathematical growth in number/number operations, and
algebraic thinking/reasoning
•Using ten, twenty, and hundred grids for developing number sense
•Using visual models when problem solving
•Providing practice for those who need to “see” a concept
•Making Common Core Alignments come to life
•Modeling equality and the symbols related to equality
•Creating connections among strands of mathematical content
•Adding meaning to traditional number sentences
•Adding rigor for advanced students
•Changing the unit and focusing upon value
•Effective methods of communicating/proving solutions
•Using numbers and symbols to decode and encode mathematical
expressions and equation
•Creating word problems and strategies for illustrating, solving, and
proving word problems
